History
In 1953, C.B. Askins Sr. founded a concrete block and ready-mix company in Lake City. This company, named South Carolina Prestress Corp., would eventually become one of the largest independent, family-owned concrete block companies in South Carolina.
In the late 1980s, C.B. Askins Sr. turned the operation of South Carolina Prestress over to his grandson, Scott W. Askins. Over the next 18 years, Scott guided the concrete block company through a period of explosive growth, culminating in the business operations being split into two operating companies – one for ready-mix (South Carolina Prestress Corp.) and one for masonry block units (Carolina Prestress Corp.).
Scott’s vision and determination to make Carolina Prestress the premiere concrete block manufacturer in the Carolinas ultimately led to the sale of the ready-mix operations (South Carolina Prestress Corp.) in 2008. Able to concentrate solely on the block operations of Carolina Prestress Corp., Scott Askins started the development of new concrete products, including green block (recycled block) and the creation of The Palmetto Line of Architectural Block.
Today, Carolina Prestress is still led by the 3rd generation of the Askins’ family. The concrete block company has stayed true to its roots, and is still headquartered in Lake City, South Carolina.
With three block plants, its own fleet of flatbeds and dump trucks and over 60 employees, Carolina Prestress Corp. is positioned to remain a leading manufacturer of concrete block products for many years to come.
